When it comes to warranty, we immediately imagine a smiling seller who kindly tells us that everything will be fixed in the very near future. And maybe he even offers us coffee at the expense of the establishment, that is, sorry, the store. However, regarding the latter we dreamed. What is a guarantee? This is an application to the product, which ensures the rights of the buyer in case of force majeure. Now let's use the dictionaries.

The word came either from French or from German. Here the dictionary does not have a definite point of view. One thing is clear: in the time of Peter the Great, they already understood well what a guarantee is. Unfortunately, the dictionary does not indicate the old meaning of the word, and therefore, we can conclude that it was the same as now. Probably only related to other items simply because there were no stores with household appliances then. But there were various agreements between people or even entire states that needed guarantees.

We have already mentioned the modern meaning of the word “guarantee”, but did not specify it. And this is our unforgivable mistake. In order to fix it, we put aside the etymological dictionary and arm ourselves with sensible ones. And there we read the following: “Guarantee, guarantee of something, provision.”
The latter may not concern any formal interactions. Warranty is also observed in an informal relationship.
One involuntarily recalls an episode from The Godfather (1972) when Michael talks to Sollozzo in a restaurant and asks for guarantees that his father should not be touched anymore, and that the drug lord pretends to be a fool and claims that he himself can’t give any guarantees and what Michael is talking about.
