What is a landfill, what can it be?

The word "landfill" is of Greek origin. The meaning of Greek expressions, from the combination of which this term appeared, is closest to the word "polygon". Initially, the term "landfill" was used only by the military. This word was used to refer to territories of various purposes that are objects of military departments. Today, this word is used not only in connection with any military activities.

What it is?

Special land reserved for certain purposes, suitably equipped and with limited access - this is what a landfill is. The goals for which the territory is equipped can be different.

Landfills are used for the collection, storage, sorting and processing of household waste, specific waste. For example, they are required for the storage and isolation of spent fuel in reactors or for the destruction of waste remaining in meat processing plants.

Of course, landfills can be designed for other purposes. For example, in such territories scientific experiments can be carried out, any research carried out. Of course, the territories of landfills and the military are used to test weapons, conduct exercises or other purposes.

How are they classified?

We found out what a landfill is. But often the question arises of how it can be. Is there a classification for such territories? There is indeed a classification division, according to it, objects differ:

  • by type of ownership - private or departmental;
  • on purpose;
  • by operating time - permanent or not.

The purpose of the landfill may be the following needs:

  • conducting military exercises with and without the use of technology;
  • honing shooting or other skills, army training exercises;
  • storage and disposal of specific, often hazardous waste, such as nuclear;
  • industrial experimental activity;
  • implementation of research activities;
  • tests, both related to weapons, and to any other object or phenomenon;
  • Warehousing, sorting or processing of household waste.

Of course, the target destination may be something else, for example, testing new automobile engines or checking the quality of products.

Are landfills dangerous?

It’s not pleasant to live near such a structure as a military, test or landfill. Of course, people who are forced to live near such territories are interested in their arrangement. This interest is caused not so much by idle curiosity as by uncertainty about the security of the neighborhood with such territories.

On the territory of the landfill, whose borders are clearly marked and in the immediate vicinity of it, any human activities, gathering and hunting are completely prohibited.

Other prohibitions are imposed on the neighboring territories, depending on the level of secrecy of the object or in connection with the specifics of its use. For example, in the vicinity of landfills or cattle burial grounds, any use of water bodies, including swimming in them, is strictly prohibited.

Disposal of a landfill

However, although a rather large number of requirements for the arrangement of the landfills themselves and the neighboring territory adjacent to them are prescribed by law, in practice people themselves often do not think about security. For example, picking mushrooms or berries in planting shelterbelts near landfills with garbage is not so rare.
