early years
G.S. Poltavchenko was born in the capital of Azerbaijan - the city of Baku, which is located on the shores of the Caspian Sea. His father at that time held the position of commander of divisional ships. The meeting of the parents of George Sergeyevich occurred in the mother’s homeland - in the city of St. Petersburg, where his father studied at the naval school. Five years later, they got married and left for the city of Poti, which is located in western Georgia.
Unfortunately, at that time there was a reorganization of the armed forces of the USSR and the father of Georgy Poltavchenko was demobilized. The family decides to return to St. Petersburg, where the family’s father gets a job in the Northwest State River Shipping Company, and his mother gets a job at the Russian company Aeroflot.
The future governor of St. Petersburg graduates from school with a physical and mathematical bias and at the same time is actively involved in basketball. His school friends and teachers speak of him as an athletic and sociable young man with an independent disposition. In school years, Georgy Poltavchenko had two best friends. He still maintains a warm relationship with one of them.
After graduating from high school, Georgy Sergeevich successfully passes exams for the specialty of mechanical engineer in aerospace medicine devices at the Leningrad Institute of Aviation Instrumentation.
Career path
G. S. Poltavchenko began his career as a member of the youth organization of the Communist Party of the USSR, where he worked for a year. Then he received an invitation to the USSR State Security Committee, where he worked for thirteen years, holding various positions.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the abolition of the committee, Georgy Sergeyevich began work in the ranks of the Federal Tax Police of St. Petersburg. Under his leadership, a whole department was created, the so-called excise service, the duties of which included control of the alcohol market.
In the early 2000s, G. S. Poltavchenko was appointed Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Leningrad Region, and then in the Central Federal District. He will subsequently be removed from this post in connection with the transfer to another job.
Governor of St. Petersburg
In the third quarter of 2011, G. S. Poltavchenko, a candidate from the United Russia party, was elected governor of the cultural capital. First of all, the new governor of St. Petersburg canceled most of the projects of his predecessor (V. I. Matvienko). He explained his actions in the media by the exorbitant high cost of building these facilities for the city budget.
Under his leadership, the famous Zenit Arena stadium was built and large banners were not allowed in the city center. Currently, it is planned to actively develop the urban auto cluster, which implies the construction of new automobile plants.Also, the administration of the governor of St. Petersburg created a state program for the development of the tourism industry, in connection with which new investors are attracted to build hotels in the city. Also in the near future, construction projects for the new Museum of the History of the Siege and the largest Northern Aquarium are under consideration. G.S. Poltavchenko is the first governor of St. Petersburg, who is widely known to the mass public as an Orthodox Christian. He takes an active part in all reconstruction projects of Orthodox churches and monasteries.
Georgy Sergeyevich also attends divine services and annually makes pilgrimages to holy places. Most often, for these purposes, he visits Greece and the Middle East. Currently, George Sergeyevich is in a happy marriage. His wife, Ekaterina Leonidovna, is a librarian translator and art critic.
