This date has been celebrated for many years, although not everyone is aware of how it arose and why it is still held in high esteem. But we are talking about the Defender of the Fatherland Day, which is always celebrated on the same day. How to relax in February next year? Let's try to figure this out.
How did this holiday come about?
A long tradition of the Russian state is the veneration of warriors protecting their native land. From time immemorial, men standing guard over the borders of the Motherland have been respected by their fellow citizens.
Before the revolution of 1917, the holiday of the soldiers of the Russian army was on the sixth of May, the day when they honored St. George the Victorious. It was he who was a symbol of the strength of Russian weapons and the victory of the Russian people over enemies who tried to destroy the country. During the celebration of the Day of Warriors, the best military men were awarded with George Crosses and other medals. And in the temples, prayers were held for the dead soldiers.
Everything changed in 1917 when the Bolsheviks came to power. The old traditions were abolished by the new government. But then the Red Army was organized to defend the revolution from foreign intervention.
Five years later, in 1922, a new holiday was established - Red Army Day. In the 46th, after the victory in the Great Patriotic War, the holiday was renamed again - on the Day of the Soviet Army. That is what he was called until the collapse of the USSR. And since 2006 this celebration has received yet another, the last to date, name - Defender of the Fatherland Day.
