Roundabouts: intersection rules

Following the rules of the road for any driver is a vital necessity. Each person driving a vehicle is obliged to know and be able to put into practice the algorithm for performing maneuvers on the roadway without interfering with other cars, trucks, buses, etc. For example, if the intersection involves roundabout traffic, the rules of the passage of such a section are clearly regulated by traffic rules . The driver’s task is to choose the right lane and direction, as well as correctly exit from this zone. This is necessary in order to minimize the risk of an emergency and, consequently, an accident. Since November 2017, new rules for the passage of roundabouts. They are described in detail below.

Crossroads: Definition

This term refers to a section of the road that resembles an island in appearance. According to the rules of travel, the circular movement in this area should be organized counterclockwise. However, this condition is relevant exclusively for roads with right-hand movement of vehicles. If driving is on the left, drive in the opposite direction. This feature is important to consider in each region.

According to the rules of travel, roundabouts should be carried out as long as the vehicle is in the zone of the intersection. At the same time, drivers do not need to turn on the turn signals while overcoming this section. Light signals need to be given only in case of lane changing from one strip to another.

Roundabout Circulation

Signs

Before such intersections, a certain symbol is always set. The sign is called "Circular motion." The rules of travel in each case depend on the direction of the arrows on the symbol. This means that it is allowed to turn only in the direction indicated by the sign. U-turn is prohibited. In addition, it is important to know about the following features: the first turn must be carried out to the right.

Most often at the same time with this sign is set the symbol "Make way". This is a requirement, which means that the person driving the vehicle should not begin to move or carry out any other maneuver, if this provokes other participants who have the advantage, to change their speed or trajectory. Outwardly, it looks like an inverted white triangle with a red border.

It is important to know that the “Circular motion” symbol is not a priority sign. The driving rules of such a section directly depend on whether a sign has been established at the same time, which stands for the requirement to take into account the priority of traffic participants moving in the intersection zone. Often, regulation is carried out using the sign "Main road".

Previously, if these symbols were absent, the driver was obliged to provide the advantage of travel to vehicles that were located in relation to him on the right. On 08/08/2017, new rules for the passage of roundabouts entered into force. According to them, any vehicle moving in this area has an advantage over cars that are just about to enter this zone. In other words, the right-hand rule regarding such intersections is no longer relevant.

If there is a traffic light or priority signs, you need to move according to their conditions.

The need to prevent chaos on the road is due to changes in the rules of travel. Circular movement was previously associated with areas where there was a high risk of an accident. Prior to the amendment, the driver should give way to other participants only with a sign indicating the relevant requirement. If the symbol was absent, the person driving the vehicle had an advantage. These rules were found to be imperfect, since accidents were very often recorded at roundabouts. From now on, emergency situations are created much less frequently. This is due to the fact that the drivers clearly understood that the right vehicle to drive in a circle has the right of primary access.

Often in such areas with a large area, the sign “Pedestrian crossing” is set. The zone for passersby is not regulated in any way. According to the traffic rules, in all cases without exception the driver must give way to pedestrians. It is important to know that the priority right to move is not only those passers-by who have already stepped on a zebra with at least one foot, but also those who are just about to carry out a maneuver, that is, people who are in close proximity to a sign or marking.

Strip selection

This moment is not regulated by traffic rules in any way. There are no rules for driving in a roundabout with respect to one or another lane, however, in order to avoid an emergency, it is recommended to listen to the following tips:

  • It is allowed to enter the intersection with the roundabout organized on it from any lane. According to paragraph 8.5 of the SDA, the driver is obliged to rearrange to the right lane in advance before making any maneuver. In this case, the exception to the Rules are sections with circular motion. In other words, the driver can enter the intersection from absolutely any lane. But it is important to take into account the occupied row. For example, when entering from the left lane, it is unacceptable to be reconstructed in the extreme right lane. This is because when performing this maneuver, the risk of an accident significantly increases.
  • If the number of lanes at the intersection does not coincide with their number on the stretch of road along which the vehicle is moving, the motorist is obliged to change lanes in advance.
  • If the person driving the car needs to turn right, it is advisable to occupy the corresponding lane. This recommendation is also relevant for drivers who want to change direction and move to the left.
  • It is advisable to occupy the central strip, if necessary, to continue to move directly.

Following these recommendations significantly reduces the risk of an emergency and gross violations involving the use of penalties for the driver.

Features of making a right turn

According to the rules of travel, circular motion must be counterclockwise. Therefore, the driver who intends to turn right is obliged to reduce speed and turn on the appropriate light signal in advance. In addition, it must be rebuilt in advance. In this case, in the far right lane.

According to the new rules of moving, the roundabout should be organized as comfortable as possible for all participants. A driver who intends to enter such a crossroads must make sure that other vehicles pass him. This is true at rush hour, when traffic is as intense as possible and most people take advantage of the right, making it difficult for a new participant to maneuver.

It is important to remember that the rules for the passage of roundabouts with traffic rules regulate very strictly.According to them, at the entrance the driver is obliged to give way to all vehicles moving in a circle.

Features of making a left turn

Prior to the maneuver, it is necessary to change lanes. If there are more of them than in the area that the driver intends to leave, you need to take the left row.

If the intersection involves two-lane traffic, you must follow a different algorithm. You need to start the maneuver in the left lane. As soon as the first or second congress is overcome, you must immediately reorganize in the right lane. It is important not to forget to include the appropriate turn signals.

The rules of the roundabout at a three-row intersection are similar to those described above. The only difference is that the driver needs to be rebuilt twice in the right lane. This maneuver requires maximum attention. It must be carried out carefully, timely and adequately assessing the situation on the road.

Roundabout

Forward movement

Such crossroads can be adjoined by how pleasing the number of secondary roads. It is this feature that is decisive for drivers, it is guided by a person when evaluating their actions on the roadway:

  • If there are more than 2 lanes at the intersection, you must occupy the middle.
  • If there are 2 rows on the site, the choice of the optimal zone directly depends on the traffic situation that prevailed at the time the driver made the maneuver. It is important to remember the need to comply with the requirements of priority signs, if any.
  • It is allowed to move the roundabout with the aim of further moving forward and in the right lane. But it is important to remember that in this case, the driver can interfere with another participant who intends to make a right turn from the middle row.

Thus, it is most advisable to carry out movement in the middle lane. It is important to remember the need to give way to all passers-by if there is a pedestrian crossing at the intersection.

Features of leaving the site

This situation is strictly regulated by traffic rules. According to the Rules, leaving the intersection at which traffic in a circle is organized is necessary only from the right lane.

In this case, the driver immediately before changing lanes is required to adequately assess the situation and give way to all vehicles located in relation to him on the right. This is due to the fact that at roundabouts it is allowed to overtake. In addition, you can stop at them, but only on condition that the distance from the border of the merger of the roadway and this section is at least 5 m.

Thus, all drivers must clearly remember the following rule: entry is allowed from any lane, exit is exclusively from the right.

Priority sign

Adjustable Roundabouts

In this case, the entire section is a single object, and a traffic light is installed at each entrance. As a rule, such a scheme is used only at intersections of a small area where minor roads are clearly visible. For large sites, it is not always relevant.

Traffic rules with a traffic light:

  • Circular movement is carried out according to the requirements of a signal light. If it is on, the driver should not pay attention to priority signs.
  • If, for any reason, the traffic controller took responsibility for organizing the movement, it is necessary to carry out his orders, even if they contradict traffic signals.
  • Priority is given to vehicles at a roundabout. When you turn on the enable signal, which has a green color, the entering driver must give way (including pedestrians). He must also make sure that all participants in the movement have completed the maneuver that has begun.

If the requirements of the signal light contradict the signs, you must focus on the installed symbols, and not on the traffic light.

Identification of violation

Penalties

The amount of monetary compensation is regulated by the Code of Administrative Offenses. If you enter a roundabout at a time when the traffic light gives a red signal, the driver faces a fine of 1000 rubles.

If the motorist commits a gross violation repeatedly, the amount of monetary compensation is 5 times larger. As an alternative, a punishment measure is used, which implies the deprivation of a driver's license for a period of 4 months to six months. The choice of sanctions against the violator is made by the court.

The penalty is also imposed in the following situations:

  • The driver did not grant the right of priority to vehicles at the intersection.
  • Crossing the site in the oncoming lane.
  • The driver during the lane in another row did not turn on the corresponding light signal.
  • Departure from the roundabout section from the central or left lane.
  • Parking.

In such cases, a fine of 1,000 rubles is imposed.

According to the new driving rules, the roundabout should be comfortable for all participants. Stopping at an intersection is permissible only when the distance to the intersected roadway is 5 m or more. Failure to comply with this condition will result in a fine of 500 rubles.

Ignoring the requirement of the sign to observe the direction of movement leads to the loss of a driver’s license. It is important for drivers to remember that the intersection at which the right-hand movement of vehicles is organized must be driven counterclockwise.

Penalties

Finally

Since November 2017, some changes have come into force. Since that time, new rules for the passage of roundabouts. According to them, vehicles located directly at the intersection have the right to preferential movement. New participants in the movement must give way to them. This rule applies to unregulated intersections. If there is a traffic light, it is necessary to be guided by its signals. For non-compliance with the rules, a fine is imposed on the violator, the amount of which varies from 500 to 5000 rubles.
