The country's oil and gas industry is one of the key sources of income for the Russian state. The top list of Russian oil companies includes seven vertically integrated corporations. Most of them are state-owned companies that collectively produce more than 63% of hydrocarbons.
Industry leader
Surprisingly, PJSC Gazprom holds the first place in the list of Russian oil companies, however, in terms of profit. Among the purely oil companies, the fourth place is taken by the Gazprom Neft subsidiary. The state owns 50.2% in the global company, and 95.7% in the daughter. The company's capitalization amounted to about $ 44 billion.
The company was the first to start producing hydrocarbons on the country's Arctic shelf. According to the results of 2017, Gazprom Neft's share of high-tech wells amounted to 60%, it is the leader in the industry in this indicator.
The volume produced last year is 89.75 million tons of oil equivalent. The company is actively working abroad, now oil exploration and production is underway in Romania, Angola, Bosnia and Herzegovina. In Iraq, the Badra field is under development, and several more in southern Kurdistan. Among the assets there are oil and grease plants in Italy and oil refineries in Hungary.
Largest in the world
Rosneft, Gazprom's eternal rival, has been the world's largest oil producer since 2013. Especially after the takeover of TNK-BP, which was usually in third place on the list of Russian oil companies. In 2016, the Bashneft company was purchased, which previously closed the list of the largest oil producers. However, in terms of revenue, it is in third place, yielding also to Lukoil. Fortune Global 500 is ranked 128th in the ranking. The company employs 170 thousand people. Rosneft capitalization is $ 96 billion.
Rosneft is a global energy corporation with major assets in Russia. The company has a diversified portfolio of projects in the most promising areas of the oil and gas industry, including Venezuela, the Republic of Cuba, Canada, the USA, Brazil, Norway, Germany, Italy, Mongolia, China, Vietnam, the UAE and many other countries of the world.
The oil and gas company has the largest assets in the country in the oil refining industry, including 10 large oil refineries. The sales network covers 59 regions of the country and neighboring countries.
27 years on the market
The first place in the list of Russian oil companies is held by Lukoil, which was created under the Soviet Union in 1991 as the state concern LangepasUrayKogalymneft. The company survived the collapse of the country and was privatized in 1994 by industry leaders. Now it is one of the largest vertically integrated companies in the industry in the world with assets of $ 111.8 billion. Lukoil accounts for more than 2% of world oil production and about 1% of proven hydrocarbon reserves. It has a full production cycle - from exploration and production to refining and marketing of petroleum products. The company employs more than 110 thousand people.
In Russia, the company has about 90% of proved reserves and 87% of commercial hydrocarbon production. 16 projects are being implemented abroad in 12 countries, including Kazakhstan, Iran, Iraq, Venezuela. Production has now begun in Kazakhstan and Egypt.

Formed in 1993, Surgutneftegas is part of the Fortune Global 500.The main production capacities are located in Eastern Siberia (Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug). Assets reached $ 74.6 billion. Its structure includes the Kirishinefteorgsintez oil refinery and the Surgut gas refinery. The company employs 101.3 thousand people.
Tatneft, one of the country's oldest companies, was established in 1950. The headquarters is located in the small Tatar city of Almetyevsk. In terms of oil production is in fifth place. It operates in 77 fields, owns stakes in several petrochemical enterprises and a network of 689 gas stations. It is the founder and largest shareholder of Zenit Bank. It ranks 15th among Russian companies in terms of revenue.
Service companies
The list of oil drilling companies in Russia includes several hundred enterprises, including relatively large 144. In the ranking compiled from a survey of the largest Russian oil companies, ERIELL won the first place in the category of Production and Exploration Drilling. The international service corporation operates in Russia, Europe, North Africa, Central and South Asia. The main strategic partner is Gazprombank, which owns a 39.6% stake in ERIELL.
The largest players in the service market are also the American corporations Schlumburge and Hallibarton. They have advanced technologies for optimizing the drilling process, which reduce costs and the wear period.
Independent companies
Independent oil and gas companies (NOCs) in recent years have occupied 4% of oil and gas production. Now the country has 147 independent companies, including 64 enterprises on this list of small oil companies. In Russia, 80% of production comes from the Irkutsk Oil Company, the Rus-Oil group of companies (from Eastern Siberia). And 33 small oil companies of Tatarstan. At such enterprises, the productivity is approximately 430 thousand barrels per day, individual companies produce from 150 thousand barrels per day.
The main factors that ensure the stability of the NOC are the balanced structure of sales (some are sold on the domestic market, and the other for export), monotonous production, lack of sanctions. Reducing the cost of production also contributes to the work with local service companies. On this list are major Russian oil companies, including Zarubezhneft, Tomskneft, Salym Petroleum Development N.V.
Many companies have tax incentives for mining and export duties. Particularly good working conditions for small oil companies have been created in Tatarstan, where they account for more than 7 million tons (or 22%) of hydrocarbons. In 1997, they mined only 3%.
