Chernihiv Compound in Moscow is a place with a history stretching back 600 years. You can get there by walking along Pyatnitskaya street. The complex includes architectural monuments dating from the XIV-XV centuries. Recently it was restored in honor of the anniversary.
About the place
The Chernigov Patriarchal Compound in Moscow began its history even when the Tatar-Mongol yoke was planted on Russian soil. Here is the temple, which was built in honor of the cutting off of the head of the Forerunner of John in front of Bor. These places are the oldest in the entire capital.
Previously, the street was called Lenivka, and Zamoskvorechye was known as Zarechye. Everything that is here now has grown out of the unremarkable posad of artisans that was on the outskirts of the city.
In those places where the Chernihiv Compound of Moscow appeared, there used to be a trade road, and around you could see a dense forest. That is why the church, ancient and picturesque, was described as the one located near Bor. The Chernihiv Compound in Moscow is colorfully described by a chronicle dated to 1415. Then he was called the Ivanovo Monastery. This name was given in honor of John the Baptist. According to the scripture, it was to him that the father of Vasily the Dark II came, when the future king was just born, since the birth was painful.
The Chernigov Patriarchal Compound in Moscow changed its name also in 1564, when it was called the Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Church. In general, this building is considered the first stone church of the entire District. It replaced the aged and outdated wooden structure. Since 1578, Ivan the Terrible, with the support of the people, ordered the remains of Mikhail, the Grand Duke, as well as the boyar Fedor, who died a martyrdom at the hands of the Horde in 1245, to be brought here from Chernigov.

It was in the refectory that the relics were met. And there is a reasonable explanation for this. The fact is that the street, called Ordynka, which is near Pyatnitskaya, is called so because it was possible to contact representatives of the Golden Horde through it. The Chernihiv Compound in Moscow was the link between the capital and the Tatar merchants who came here. In addition, interpreters (i.e. translators) lived here. In honor of this, the Tolmachevsky lanes that are located nearby are named.
On the Horde in the Chernigov Compound in Moscow came the very holy remains when the Tatar yoke fell. To perpetuate this memorable event, another structure dedicated to miracle workers was created at the temple.
Restoration work
The year 2011 is notable for the fact that archaeologists then restored the foundation in this old church. During this process, under the thickness of the floor, suddenly found remains and a tombstone, which was dated to the XVII century. The inscriptions are executed in Old Slavic. They contained information that the ancestor of the Malyutin family, who was a member of the Trade Charter, the first in Moscow, rests here.
Before the death of his wife, this man bequeathed to her to build a temple of stone, instead of standing here made of wood. At that time it was an expensive operation, and it was necessary to pay a lot for it. The span, located between the two churches, is called Chernihiv. He has a great shape. The total length is 200 m, there are two turns between which there is a right angle. The final formation of the complex ended in 1781. Together with the state, this place had to go through the most steep turns: it was the yoke, the hard Time of Troubles, the steep Petrine reforms and military operations.
Nowadays
In 1917, the local churches were closed.In the 30s, bells were removed from the roofs, and warehouses were made from the premises. Eyewitnesses said that the shrines were desecrated, and toilets were built on the altars. For a long time this place was empty until in 1977 two churches were restored as part of the preparation for the Olympics, which took place in Moscow. Crosses and beautiful domes were returned back. 1991 is characterized by the fact that the temple of the martyrs became part of this complex. Since 2009, a restoration has also been carried out here, which was completed only recently.
Legacy for posterity
Remains of white stone, as well as foundations and basement, remind of the old building. The interiors have murals dating from the 17th-19th centuries. Those people who carried out the restoration tried to do everything possible in order to preserve the original materials that betrayed conservation, so that they could be seen by future generations.
Seen from the outside, some fragments may go unnoticed. There is a thick layer of plaster on top, and under it you can see the updated murals. Everything is done in such a way as to remove layers in the future and discover relics of antiquity without harming them. They must be preserved with maximum care.
