Relationship history

In the years 1918-1920. Estonian people fought a war of independence from young Soviet Russia. The result of this war was the signing of the Tartu Peace Treaty in 1920, which became the formal basis of Estonian sovereignty. The first Estonian embassy in Moscow began work in 1921, and was headed by Ado Birk.

Subsequently, the Soviet Union violated the mutual recognition treaty with Estonia and occupied the country in 1939, and then annexed it. This act has been condemned by the entire international community.

Re-independence

The second recognition of Estonia’s independence took place in January 1991, when Boris Yeltsin and Arnold Ruutel signed an agreement regulating relations between two sovereign states formed as a result of the liquidation of the Soviet Union.

However, the border agreement was signed only in 2005. Relations between the two countries cannot be called cloudless, since the Estonian government is regularly criticized by Russia for infringing on the rights of the Russian-speaking population.

The current state of relations

Today, the Estonian Embassy in Moscow is located on Maly Kislovsky Lane, Building 5. This is a quiet old district in the very center of Moscow in the immediate vicinity of the Kremlin, the Conservatory and the Arbat.

The Estonian Embassy in Moscow issues visas to Russians, guided by generally accepted EU rules. To obtain permission to enter the Baltic Republic, one must demonstrate solvency and an obvious intention to leave the EU at the appointed time. According to traveler reviews, Estonia is very loyal to Russian tourists, despite the difficulties in relations. The embassy does not work on weekends and public holidays in Estonia.
