Russian-Turkmen relations

Immediately after independence by all republics of the former USSR, Turkmenistan began to close itself from the outside world. The regime of the president’s sole power, which was not controlled by other branches of government, was consistently built in the country.

Thus, the republic, which is very rich in resources and has a favorable economic and geographical position, was slowly breaking ties with its former partners, which could not but affect both political and economic cooperation.

Despite the fact that Turkmenistan has a very wary relationship with most countries of the world, its leadership has considerable confidence in Russia. For example, the Russian military is guarding the state border with troubled countries such as Afghanistan and Iran.

Partnership Against Isolation

However, despite the authorities' attempts to isolate themselves, business still managed to penetrate the closed republic from time to time. So, in 2007, Russian companies began building the Caspian gas pipeline branch, which was supposed to connect the Central Asian fields and European consumers.

We can say that thanks to this, the Russian raw material giants succeeded in putting under control almost the entire export of raw materials from Turkmenistan.

Despite the country's closeness, it nevertheless maintains constant diplomatic communication with Russia. The Embassy of Turkmenistan in Moscow consists of a consular section, a cultural center at the embassy, a general office of the Turkmen Airlines and a Sunday school of the Turkmen language.

In Moscow, the Embassy of Turkmenistan is located at 22 Filippovsky Lane, in the immediate vicinity of the Aratskaya metro station and just eight minutes of a leisurely walk from the Kropotkinskaya station. Before the revolution of 1917, the building housed a tenement house, built in 1908 according to the project of architect Georgy Evlanov.

The consular section of the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Moscow, which is also involved in issuing visas, is located at 14/34 Maly Afanasyevsky Lane, building 1.

It should be noted that in 2015, the Consulate General of Turkmenistan was opened in Astrakhan, which is located at the address: 1 Arshanskaya Street, 11.
