Woman shares tips on how to return to work after a long break

Nicole Richardson had never planned to leave the corporate world for nine years. Even when she gave birth to children, she continued to work as an engineer in the aviation and automotive industries. But as soon as she gave birth to a third child, everything changed. She felt tired, she no longer had the strength to continue working. So she decided to focus on the children. But just for a short while, she did not expect that life would throw up new surprises, and the rhythm would become crazier and crazier.

Beginning of the way back

Of course, Richardson was proud of her successes in the parental field, but she also wanted to set an example for her daughters as a working lady. But returning to a career was not so simple. She did not understand how to return to the corporate world. While she was busy with household chores, many work contacts were confused.

In 2017, luck smiled at her: her daughter played football, and, having met with the parents of the girls from her daughter's team, she found out that their company was taking some kind of initiative. Johnson & Johnson offered short-term jobs for those who wish to return to work in the fields of science, new technologies, design, production and mathematics.

After making a phone call and sending an email, Richardson decided to officially declare her intention to participate in the project.

Position at Johnson & Johnson

Under the guidance of her new mentors, the 43-year-old woman began a career in robotics. But she was tormented by doubts, and what if the family could not cope with her absence, that her experience and qualifications would not be enough to complete the tasks, and so on.

But while she was undergoing a six-month probationary period at the company, it turned out that her skills were very good, and she was offered the position of senior development engineer.

Return Programs

Companies have long had a chance to internship, because this is a great opportunity to attract good students to work. But returning to work is something new.

But due to limited labor markets and growing goals, companies have begun adding return programs to their toolkits to recruit new staff.

Almost 37 percent of women and 24 percent of men take career breaks. More often than not, they are forced to do this in order to take care of the family. Almost all return programs are aimed at people who have not worked for at least two years. This allows employees and employers to experience each other without unnecessary risks and obligations. In addition to honing their skills, such programs offer other staff support, mentoring and training.

For the first time, such a program was applied by Goldman Sachs in 2009. And if immediately refunds were applicable only for the financial and technical sphere, now the range of posts is expanding significantly. Especially when you consider that this practice is successfully manifesting itself.
