How to prevent your interlocutor from constantly interrupting you, including the boss

There may be various problems in communicating with management. Very often, subordinates are faced with the fact that the head constantly interrupts them during a conversation. This is a rather serious situation, and its causes may be different. But do not panic, as there is always a way out of any situation. Let's try to figure out why your boss never lets you speak and interrupts during a business conversation or meeting.

How to be

What do you do when you are constantly interrupted? Just rude to the other person? But if you are talking to someone who is superior to you in position, you cannot do that. What exactly is worth answering to the interlocutor in order to maintain a healthy business relationship.

Most people are not happy to remain silent when they have something to say. Why should you be silent when discussing important things for you? Why are you letting the other person interrupt you? Interruption is a very bad habit that must be fixed. However, depending on the reasons and extent of the relationship, it should be handled in different ways. Some people interrupt because they are characterized by emotional straightforwardness, others because they are creative in nature, some because they want to assert themselves at your expense.

Consider a few simple ways in which you can wean people to interrupt you during a conversation.

First way

This method involves an indirect appeal to human behavior. It consists in simply letting the person you are talking to interrupt, and then start your speech anew in a calm and respectful tone. Without any sarcasm and anger. For example, instead of saying, “I would be grateful if I would not be interrupted in the future,” say “I am interested in hearing your opinion, but first I would like to share some results with you ...”. This approach helps the interlocutor, who constantly interrupts, to understand that his behavior is a little unacceptable.

However, if you are dealing with a so-called chronic breaker, but you really have important information, ask him to keep his thoughts to himself until you finish your report. In this case, you can build a conversation as follows: “I would really like to hear your reaction and feedback on the analysis, but first I would like to provide you with all the results. Do you agree? ”

Second way

When the first method does not work, you have to go for more radical measures. It consists in obtaining support from a trustee. If one of the employees is interrupted by the boss during his report, then another person can interrupt the boss and ask you if you have finished your thought. It may look something like this: “I am very sorry that it happened (name of the boss). It looks like our colleague (name) has something to say? ” This approach to terminating interrupts is considered more powerful.

Universal words

If the conversation with the boss does not work out due to constant interruptions on his part, you can try to use universal words, such as “good” and “thank you”. You just need to answer them to the interruption and then continue your offer. Here's how it will look in practice:

  • The results of our analysis showed that ...
  • Yes, we just spoke with your colleagues about this morning ...
  • Well, thanks ... The results of our analysis showed that ...

Gestures

A bolder approach is to gesticulate simultaneously with the speech. The idea is to raise your fingers slightly above the surface of the table each time. The higher you raise your palm, the more aggressive your gesture becomes. In the worst case scenario, this sign will look like a “stop”. The technique of gesturing is to pronounce the words, raise your hand a little and continue your phrase.

Experts also offer this option: if the interlocutor interrupts you, touch his forearm and politely say, “Can I finish, please?” This, of course, is a more effective approach, and it will certainly stop the interruption, but still you should not use it without special need. It is more suitable for communicating with children and relatives. Use it in the office when communicating with the boss is possible only as a last resort.

Conclusion

The conversation methods described above should help you achieve a constructive conversation with your boss. If none of the approaches described above helps to change the situation, then perhaps you should just discuss your interaction with the boss. Try to explain to him exactly what the problem is, and find alternative ways to solve it. Ultimately, a direct conversation with a person aimed at improving his communication skills is quite capable of helping you achieve positive results.

In the end, I would like to note that the ability to communicate is a talent that not everyone possesses. But do not be upset, as this can be learned.
