How to explain the benefit gap at the interview: expert advice

In the process of interviewing candidates for jobs with representatives of personnel departments, often unpleasant questions arise, to which not everyone can give the right answers. Gaps in seniority just can become the basis for awkward situations during such interviews. The expert advice below will help you not only get out of the way when such questions arise, but also increase your chances of finding a job.

Clear definition of the cause

You should not wait until company representatives ask about “absenteeism” at the interview. In advance, in a resume or applying to the company for a desire to get a job, it is worthwhile to separately indicate the specific reason for the gap. Experts do not recommend going into details - the main thing is to outline the situation as a whole, including using one of the following formulations:

  • “I took advanced training courses, which allowed me to enrich my professional skills.”
  • “I served in the army, during which I was able to acquire personal qualities important for career growth.”
  • “I did not work because of the injury, which, although it deprived me of earnings, but made it possible to replenish the store of knowledge.”

Social and social activities

Lack of work at a certain stage can be caused by certain conditions in the labor market, which are independent of the person. It is important to emphasize again that time without work did not go to waste. Many companies value employees who, in principle, are not ready to sit back. Therefore, one can mention his participation in volunteer campaigns aimed at charity.

Social and social activity as such is a positive characteristic of a potential employee. But experts also advise providing the results of the work done, which will prove the productivity of the candidate.

Honesty comes first

Whatever the reason for the gap in seniority, it should be based on real facts. If only because today it will not be difficult to verify the authenticity of the statement through other channels. And do not zealously justify your absence in the work process, focusing on the emotional nature of the cause. This can cause unnecessary doubts about the candidate, even to the extent of suspicion of attempted manipulation.

In any case, directness and honesty will play into the hands of the applicant for a vacant place. Moreover, temporary unemployment is a common and quite understandable phenomenon for those who are at least somehow involved in the labor market.
