How to recover from a failed interview if we were really interested in the position

An interview is still a hassle. Sometimes, due to strong excitement and anxiety, we cannot correctly present ourselves, make a favorable impression on the employer. We are confused in the answers, forget the words, mumble something under our breath, or even silently sit on a chair.

Believe me, a huge number of people have encountered in life with failed interviews. But, according to experienced recruitment managers, some of the applicants were able to quickly recover, rehabilitate themselves and get a dream job. Here are the steps to take in this case.

Send a thank you note

A letter of appreciation must be written in any case, regardless of whether the interview was successful or unsuccessful. This is a gesture of respect for the recruiter, the employer for taking the time to consider your candidacy, etc. In the letter, do not apologize for your mistakes and do not focus on the fact that they failed.

Just by accident, mention aspects that, for example, the recruitment manager might have overlooked or that you could not convey to him.

Connect recommendations

If you have letters of recommendation from previous places of work - it's just awesome. In this case, they can become your lifeline. Be sure to tell the recruitment manager that he can contact your former bosses so that they can confirm your knowledge, skills, experience, tell about merits and achievements.

Be sure to warn the former employer about the call so that he is ready to talk.

Complete your interview

So, let's say you were unable to provide convincing arguments why you are worthy of this work. Not only that, you didn’t tell much about yourself, so you couldn’t properly advertise yourself.

For example, Fairygodboss CEO and Co-Founder Georgin Juan recalled how one candidate, after a failed interview, sent him a detailed presentation of what he planned to do within thirty, sixty and ninety days from the time he went to work. This was so impressive for the manager that he offered this applicant further cooperation.

Make mistakes work

Remember exactly what questions took you by surprise. Objectively evaluate your capabilities, identify gaps. Highlight the reasons why you failed the interview. A thorough analysis will allow you not to make such mistakes in the future.

Instead of a conclusion

It is not always the case that we can objectively evaluate ourselves. Maybe, from your point of view, the interview was a complete failure, because you did not say even half of what you wanted. But recruitment managers could completely satisfy your answers, because do not forget that they are excellent psychologists and can distinguish a good specialist who is just worried from a bad employee who really knows nothing. So do not panic ahead of time. In this case, you need to provide supporting materials that will confirm your work experience and knowledge.
