Traded the dream job for volunteering: the inspiring story of Scott Harrison, who decided to make the world a little better

Scott Harrison once proudly declared that he had the best job in the world. He worked as a journalist and went to clubs every weekend to write reviews about bars, drinks and entertainment. And he was very well paid for it. Not only was money satisfying, he could enjoy endless entertainment that never lacked drinks and girlfriends. But one trip changed everything.

From New York to Liberia and back

The end of 2004 came, and Harrison received a very advantageous offer for a trip to Uruguay and some African countries. A few days after his fun life in New York, he saw a completely different side of reality. And although his friends were envious of his cool work, he decided not to return to it anymore.

Returning to New York, Scott was no longer able to have fun in the clubs. He devoted all his efforts to founding a charity fund that will help change the lives of other people for the better.

The fact is that in Africa, Scott faced extreme poverty and the need of local people. What he saw struck him to the core. He decided to start changing the world for the better from Liberia, the country he visited on a trip.

Its function in Liberia was very simple. First, he decided to write about all the interesting things that he found in this country in order to implement a journalistic project. However liberia is even remotely was not paradise. On his extensive journey through the country, which lasted almost 2 years, Harrison realized the full depth of the terrible conditions in which the Liberians lived. He was very shocked when he saw that the children were drinking water from dirty puddles. Foreign doctors living in Liberia have struggled with infectious and contagious diseases without much success. Without water, little can be done.

Start over

Harrison returned to the United States, wanting to change the situation of the world's poor. Therefore, he decided to sell all his property in order to have a financial base for his idea. He knew that those 750 million people who did not have access to drinking water in the world were worth the effort.

And his efforts led to the creation of the project “Charity: Water”. And Liberia did not stop at it alone: the inhabitants of many African countries needed help.

Old connections turned out by the way

Harrison contacted several people from these distant communities to make them ambassadors of his project. They will be responsible for the proper use of donations and be responsible for their use.

To promote his charity proposal, Harrison turned to his old friends - the owners of New York nightclubs. What was the deal? The owners of nightclubs were going to offer their customers an open bar for one day, and for this they offered to donate $ 20 to the Harrison case as compensation. Fine! In one night, Harrison managed to raise $ 15,000, which was immediately sent to a refugee camp in Uganda.

8 years after its creation, Scott can be proud of himself. More than 700,000 participants joined the movement, raising $ 170 million in support of his project.

And Harrison is happy. Thanks to his idea, 5 million people around the world can drink and use drinking water. And the world of night clubs? He was forgotten by Harrison, today everything in his life is completely different priorities.
