Career growth: recruiters warn that not every successful employee can be put on the position of manager

Being a boss is not easy. You can no longer rely solely on your skills. You have to develop managerial skills by spending working hours in the conference room, making and holding meetings. According to Bharat Jayaraman, this transition will shock many new managers. But for the manager this is unacceptable.

Bharat Jayaraman is vice president of human resources at Paxos Financial Technology. He previously worked in HR at Facebook and Amazon. Bharat Jayaraman shared several ideas that help recruiters to effectively train effective managers.

Some tips

A good solution is to provide the future manager with an informal management experience. “Never call anyone a manager without looking at a recruit in action under your team,” says Bharat Jayaraman. - Clearly explain what you expect from the manager. Explain his responsibilities, his role in the life of the company, to help the new manager to orientate in his environment. ”

Bharat Jayaraman also proposes to form groups of people who have expressed a desire to be managers and make them undergo more formal training. Each month, a new group of future managers can review and discuss case studies or work with trainers and mentors.

“When people get this experience, they can say:“ Hey, this is not what I thought I would do as a manager, I'm not sure what it is for me. ” And this is a very good result, ”says Bharat Jayaraman.

What qualities should a leader have?

Managers can both create and destroy their organizations. While great leaders encourage their employees to reach their full potential and help the company surpass their goals, terrible dictators intimidate and fetter the actions of employees to the point that they want to quit.

So, what qualities does a good leader have? Experts have identified several mandatory features.

Honesty

At the moment when the team ceases to believe that its leader is telling them the truth, everything begins to fall apart. Why should workers follow their bosses if they realize that their boss is dishonest with them?

In the business world, openness and transparency are important. By setting an example, honest managers inspire their team to be equally truthful.

Communication skills

One of the biggest problems with reduced productivity is poor communication with management. For managers, it is one thing to know what needs to be done, but quite another to clearly communicate these priorities to each member of their team.

Great leaders have excellent communication skills. They can find an approach to each member of their team so that everyone works to achieve one goal. Managers should be able to communicate verbally and by email.

Determination

Whether they work for themselves or manage huge departments, in addition to the usual decisions, all managers must regularly make difficult decisions. For a business to be effective, candidates should not be afraid to act quickly when necessary. Strong leaders can quickly make difficult decisions after carefully checking and evaluating all possible options.

Confidence

To maintain the support of their team, managers must be sure that the decisions they make are correct. After making a difficult decision, managers should be able to convince their subordinates to move in this direction, even those who would make a different choice.

A responsibility

Great managers understand that they are responsible for the effectiveness of each of their team - for success and failure. To this end, they monitor all their employees to see what they can do to help them become better and develop professionally.

Sympathy

If employees are drowning in work, managers should understand them. They should be able to put themselves in the shoes of their employees and imagine what it means to do their job. When managers do not listen to their subordinates and do not understand their problems, this is destructive.

Vision of the big picture

Any company has a huge number of competing priorities. Many initiatives are moving forward at the same time. For business success, managers cannot lose sight of something because they are too busy with something else.

Creation

The best managers can think outside the box and come up with amazing ideas. Decisions are not always simple. Sometimes the best solution is to use creative solutions.

Optimism

Everyone can feel tired and frustrated at work from time to time. And in some cases, most employees can feel negative at the same time. Easy to get upset at work. Great managers understand this, so they try their best to always remain optimistic and positive.

Commitment

Great leaders tend to be responsible for their team. Maybe they have a plan for further career growth. But they are not hoping to get promoted. They are committed to their work here and now, even if they strive to move forward, developing a career.
