A young English couple from Bristol left a large apartment in a prestigious area and moved to live on a 10-meter boat. By doing this, they halved their spending on housing, but gained a lot of inconvenience, which, however, does not sadden young people, and they do not intend to leave their new "apartment".
Financial difficulties of young families
A young couple from Bristol, David and Pippa for a long time rented an apartment in a prestigious area of Clifton. Each month, they spent £ 800 on renting housing (about 63 thousand rubles). David, a landscape designer, admits that living in an apartment was spacious and comfortable, but that amount was too much for their young family.
David notes that for people who want to live life to the fullest by purchasing gadgets, chatting with friends at parties and visiting cafes and restaurants, it is very difficult to save money to buy their own real estate. To buy not the largest house in the not very prestigious area, you need from 40 to 50 thousand pounds, and for a young family this amount is simply sky-high.
From a large apartment to a small boat
After conferring with Pippa, David decided to buy a boat on eBay. He found a 1986 Mirage sailboat. This purchase cost them £ 7,000, and the couple, collecting their things, moved to a new home.
Now they have reduced housing fees by more than half, given the cost of berthing fees and maintenance of the boat. The couple is happy, despite some difficulties and inconveniences that they had to face.
The most important disadvantage is the small space in which they find themselves. The length of their boat is only 10 meters, which is several times less than the size of their last apartment. In addition, the boat does not have hot water and communications, and they can only find amenities on land. And their cat suffers from seasickness.
Future plans
But the couple, despite the difficulties that have arisen, looks to the future with great hope and enthusiasm. Although their everyday life cannot be called simple now, they can lead the lifestyle they dreamed about, buying something that they could not afford before because of the high rents.
David made friends with other boat owners who give him practical advice and support in everything. The guy admits that he was struck by the fact that people here do not boast of their boats and things, but can easily skip a glass of rum and talk heart to heart.
The young man is worried how they can survive the winter, because, for example, in order to wash clothes, you need to heat 3 teapots of water. But if everything goes smoothly, the couple plans to stay in the new house for a long time.
